About the Tennessee Meat Goat
The Tennessee Meat Goat is a trademarked line developed by Suzanne Gasparotto from myotonic goats, selected over decades for size and muscling.
The foundation is the myotonic or fainting goat, which carries a genetic condition called myotonia congenita: when startled, the muscles stiffen and the animal may fall over. It does not lose consciousness and it is not painful. The same condition is why the breed is unusually well muscled.
Selection focused on turning that into a commercial meat animal: larger frame, more muscle, and the tender meat the myotonic breeds are known for.
The trade is the myotonia itself. A goat that stiffens when startled cannot flee a dog or a coyote, so predator protection is not optional. And because this is a proprietary line rather than an open registry, ask what the breeding programme is and where the stock traces.
