About Sable goats
The Sable is a Saanen that is not white. The colour has always occurred in Saanen herds as a recessive, and for years those kids were registered as recording grades or not registered at all. American breeders organised them into a recognised breed and the American Dairy Goat Association granted full status in 2005.
Genetically and functionally they are Saanens: the same large frame, the same heavy, long lactation, the same calm temperament.
What the colour buys is sun tolerance. Coloured skin does not burn the way a white Saanen's does, which makes Sables the better choice in high-sun country and open pasture.
The trade is population size. Sables are a much smaller registry than Saanens, so finding unrelated bucks and quality stock takes more work, and the price reflects the scarcity rather than any production advantage.
