About Nubian goats
The Nubian, properly the Anglo-Nubian, was made in England in the late 1800s by crossing English goats with imported bucks from North Africa and India. The long pendulous ears and the convex Roman nose come from that eastern stock.
They are the most numerous dairy goat in the United States and the most common on small farms, for a specific reason: Nubian milk is the richest of the major dairy breeds, with the highest butterfat, which makes it the choice for cheese, soap and drinking.
They also tolerate heat better than the Swiss breeds and breed closer to year round.
The trade is volume and noise. A Nubian gives less milk by weight than a Saanen or Alpine, so on a volume-priced contract she loses. And the breed is loud, persistently and carryingly so, which is worth knowing before you keep one near a neighbour.
