About Alpine goats
The Alpine is a French dairy goat from the Alps, and it is the workhorse of commercial goat dairying alongside the Saanen.
They are large, hardy and adaptable, with erect ears and a straight face, and they come in every colour and pattern, each with its own French name. That variety is a breed feature rather than a fault.
What they are kept for is a long, level lactation: Alpines milk heavily and keep milking, which is what a dairy needs more than a high peak.
They handle a range of climates better than most dairy breeds and they graze and browse well.
The trade is temperament and containment. Alpines are assertive, they establish a clear herd order, and they are excellent escape artists. Fencing that holds sheep will not hold them.
