About Saanen goats
The Saanen comes from the Saanen valley in Switzerland and is the highest-producing dairy goat in the world, which is why it is sometimes called the Holstein of goats.
They are large, all white or cream, with erect ears and a straight or dished face, and they are calm and easy to handle, which matters twice a day in a milking parlour.
No other breed reliably gives more volume, and Saanens are the backbone of commercial goat dairying wherever it is done at scale.
The trade is components and sun. The milk is lower in butterfat than a Nubian's, so it suits fluid milk and volume contracts more than cheesemaking. And a white goat with pale skin sunburns: Saanens need shade, and they are less tolerant of intense sun and heat than the eastern breeds.
