About Santa Gertrudis cattle
Santa Gertrudis was the first beef breed developed in the United States, recognised by the USDA in 1940. It came off the King Ranch in south Texas, about five-eighths Shorthorn and three-eighths Brahman, and it is named for the Spanish land grant the ranch sits on.
The problem it solved was specific. South Texas is hot, humid and tick-country, and the British cattle the ranch had been running would not thrive there. The cross held enough Brahman for the climate and enough Shorthorn to finish.
They are deep red, large-framed, and the cows are known for raising a heavy calf in country that does not offer much.
The trade is climate again, in reverse. A breed engineered for the Gulf Coast has no particular advantage in a northern winter, and the Brahman fraction brings the same tenderness question with it.
