Murray Grey

The Murray Grey started by accident. In 1905 a roan Shorthorn cow on a property along the Murray River in Australia was bred to an Angus bull and produced twelve grey calves over her life. Every Murray Grey descends from that cow.

They are silver to dun grey, naturally polled, and moderate framed. The breed's reputation rests on two things: temperament, which is exceptional even by the standards of docile breeds, and carcass quality, with fine-grained meat and good marbling on grass.

The pale coat reflects heat better than black, and the skin under it is pigmented, so it does not burn.

The trade is population. Outside Australia the numbers are small, which limits how much genetic selection you can do within the breed and makes finding unrelated bulls a real exercise.
