Irish Black

Irish Black is a trademarked line rather than a breed in the ordinary sense. It was developed in Idaho by Maurice Boney from Friesian genetics selected over decades for beef traits, and the name and the breeding programme are held privately.

The claims made for the line are moderate mature size with high growth rate, calving ease, and carcass consistency, and the programme markets bulls rather than a general-purpose registry.

That structure is the thing to understand before you buy. A closed, single-source line means the selection decisions were made by one programme rather than by an open registry with published across-herd comparisons.

The trade is verification. Ask what performance data exists, who collected it, and whether it can be compared with EPDs from a national cattle evaluation, because in most cases it cannot be compared directly.
