Gelbvieh

Gelbvieh means yellow cattle, which is what they were called in Bavaria where they were developed from local red-yellow strains in the nineteenth century. In Germany they were a dual-purpose animal, kept for milk, meat and draft on the same farm.

In North America they are used for fertility and growth. Gelbvieh heifers reach puberty early, the cows milk well, and the calves grow, which is a combination that suits a commercial herd more than a show ring.

The most common form here is the Balancer, a registered Gelbvieh and Angus cross that fixes a hybrid animal at a known percentage instead of leaving crossbreeding to chance.

The trade is recognition. Gelbvieh is a smaller breed in the United States than Angus or Hereford, so there is less published data behind any given pedigree, and a buyer at the barn may not know what he is looking at.
