About Poland China pigs
The Poland China was developed in the Miami Valley of Ohio between 1816 and 1840, from Russian, Byfield, Big China, Berkshire and Irish Grazier stock. It is the oldest American swine breed, and despite the name no Polish pig was involved.
They are black with six white points, like a Berkshire, but with drooping ears rather than erect ones.
They were bred to be large and to grow, and for a long time they were the heaviest hogs in America. Modern Poland Chinas have been selected toward a leaner, longer-bodied animal with good feed efficiency and are used as a terminal sire.
The trade is that they are a sire breed rather than a maternal one. Litter size and mothering are not the breed's strength, and most commercial use puts a Poland China boar over crossbred sows rather than keeping purebred herds.
