The Idaho Pasture Pig is a recent American composite, developed in Idaho from Kunekune, Duroc and Berkshire, and registered from 2012.
The brief was explicit: a pig that grazes like a Kunekune but grows and finishes like a commercial breed. The upturned snout comes from the Kunekune side and means far less rooting, so a herd can be rotated on pasture without destroying it.
They are medium sized, come in several colours, and are docile enough to be handled easily.
They finish on a much higher proportion of forage than a conventional pig, which is the economic argument.
The trade is that the breed is young. The genetic base is narrow, the registry is small, performance data is limited, and claims about how much grain they save vary a great deal between sellers. Ask for actual feed records.
