About Hereford pigs
The Hereford pig was made in the American Midwest in the early 1900s, from Duroc, Poland China and Chester White stock, and named for its colouring: red with a white face, white feet and a white tail switch, deliberately matching Hereford cattle. It was recognised in 1934.
They are docile, they graze and forage well, and they mature early, which suited the farm-scale production they were built for.
The breed became popular with youth livestock programmes because of the markings and the temperament.
The trade is that the industry moved past them. Hereford pigs are moderate in growth and leanness by commercial standards, numbers are small, and the same white skin that gives them their look sunburns, so pigs on pasture need shade or a wallow.
