The Landrace is a Danish breed and it exists because of a policy decision. Denmark developed it for the British bacon trade in the late 1800s, then banned its export for decades to protect that trade. American Landrace descends from a small number of animals released to the USDA in 1934 for research.
They are white with heavy drooping ears that fall forward over the eyes, and they are the longest-bodied of the common breeds, with an extra pair of ribs in many lines, which is exactly what a bacon market wants.
The sow is the breed's real product: very large litters, heavy milking, and excellent mothering. Landrace and Yorkshire crossbred sows are the standard maternal base worldwide.
The trade is the ears and the skin. Vision is genuinely obstructed, which affects handling, and the white skin burns outdoors.
