Pineywoods hogs are not a breed in the improved sense. They are the feral and semi-feral descendants of Spanish pigs released in the Southeast from the 1500s, kept by families in the piney woods of Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana as free-ranging stock marked by ear notch rather than fenced.
That history is the animal. They forage for almost everything they eat, tolerate heat and humidity, resist parasites, and sows farrow and raise litters without help in the woods.
They come in every colour and vary widely in type, because they were never bred to a standard.
The trade is everything a commercial buyer wants. They grow slowly, finish light, and the carcass is fatter and less uniform than any market wants. They are a conservation and forage animal, kept for genetics and for the way they use land, not for a price per pound.
