The Standard donkey is the ordinary working donkey, 36 to 48 inches at the withers, and it is what most people mean by the word. It has no single country of origin, descending from the African wild ass by way of thousands of years of use around the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
They are kept now for three jobs: guarding sheep and goats, where a donkey's dislike of canids makes it an effective deterrent; packing; and companionship for horses.
They are long-lived, sure-footed, and considerably more careful than a horse. A donkey that refuses to do something has usually assessed it.
The trade is what people misread as stubbornness. Donkeys do not spook and flee, they stop and think, so horse training methods that rely on movement do not work. They also founder easily on rich pasture and need dry feed and restricted grazing.
